Empowering Grace* and Her Family to Thrive

Meet Grace, a bubbly, friendly 8-year-old. Despite being born with a life-limiting condition called SMARD (spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress), Grace’s spirit is unstoppable. Living at home with her mum and two younger siblings, whom she adores, Grace does not let her tracheostomy tube and ventilator dependence stop her.

Grace also receives her nutrition through a gastrostomy tube and the need for 24-hour, one-on-one care has placed a significant strain on her family, especially as her mom navigates life as a single parent with minimal support.

When First Option Healthcare took over Grace’s care package in December 2022, Grace’s life began to transform. Previously, she wasn’t attending school and missed out on social activities and peer interaction, which added stress to the family. However, everything changed with the introduction of two dedicated care staff members who took the time to understand Grace’s medical needs, ensuring she received safe and comprehensive care.

Grace continues to be her happy, cheeky self, forming wonderful relationships with her care staff and cherishing time with her siblings. The support provided by First Option Healthcare has not only improved Grace’s quality of life but also enhanced the overall wellbeing of her entire family.

Embracing Education and Social Activities

Now, Grace attends school full-time and absolutely loves it! Her care team supports both her medical and educational needs, allowing her to fully participate in school life. During school holidays, Grace’s mum organizes outings and club activities, with funding assistance from the ICB for transportation. Grace has enjoyed trips to Colchester Zoo, the cinema, arts and crafts sessions, and day stays at the local hospice. She even went on a school trip to the Tower of London, supported by two First Option staff members, ensuring she could enjoy the day with her classmates.

Without the support from the ICB and First Option Healthcare staff Grace would not be able to attend these extracurricular activities and would spend her school holidays at home.

Learning and Flourishing

Grace is now flourishing in her education, learning essential skills, and making great strides towards her goals. She attends a theatre after-school club once a week, a dream activity made possible by the health support she now receives. Grace is thriving socially, building friendships, engaging with her teachers, and fully participating in school life.

The support from First Option Healthcare has also given Grace’s mum much-needed respite. With the children in school, she can now take some time for herself, to see friends and family, and handle daily tasks. Recently, she even passed her driving test, a remarkable achievement that has granted the family greater independence and freedom.

Grace continues to be her happy, cheeky self, forming wonderful relationships with her care staff and cherishing time with her siblings. The support provided by First Option Healthcare has not only improved Grace’s quality of life but also enhanced the overall wellbeing of her entire family. Together, they are enjoying more quality moments and a brighter, more independent future.
