George’s Journey to Independence with First Option Healthcare

George* is a 20-years-old and lives at home with his mum, dad and two brothers in Oxfordshire. He has Epilepsy, Sleep Apnoea and Cerebral Palsy and is a wheelchair user.

Like any 20-year old George loves spending time with friends and staying active. Despite facing challenges due to his conditions, George’s strives for as much independence as possible.

The dedicated team at First Option Healthcare has worked tirelessly to understand George’s passions and preferences, ensuring he enjoys the freedom he deserves while receiving top-notch care.

“First Option’s dedication to get to know George properly has allowed us as parents to step back a little, giving George more independence from family, enabling him to lead a full and busy life including day services, shopping, coffee shops, swimming, cinema. Everything a 20 year old would like to do, all whilst keeping him safe.” George’s mum.

A Day Out with Friends

Recently, George experienced a day trip that began with a bus ride alongside his nursing team. The highlight of the outing was a visit to Lush, where George delighted in smelling various bath bombs. This simple yet joyful activity was made possible through the careful planning and support of his healthcare team.

George attends a day centre six days a week, where he mingles with friends and participates in engaging activities. When the indoor fun winds down, George and his team often explore the town. Known affectionately by locals, George enjoys the frequent hellos from familiar faces, reinforcing his status as a beloved local celebrity.

Splashing into Joy

One of George’s favourite activities is swimming every Saturday. The water provides a perfect environment for him to perform physiotherapy exercises and share weightless, comforting cuddles with his mom. This special time in the pool is a highlight of his week, bringing immense joy and therapeutic benefits.

“Every time I visit George I hear of a new experience or adventure he has been on. George’s family and nursing team are a special group of people who nurture and empower George and enable him to experience anything and everything. Being a part of his care package is a privilege.” Kelsey, George’s Clinical Lead.

Empowering Independence

First Option Healthcare has empowered George with an E trans device and facilitated access to communication switches through charitable funding. These tools have revolutionized George’s ability to express choices and make decisions, granting him greater control over his daily life and the ability to operate everyday appliances independently.

George’s journey with First Option Healthcare is a testament to the power of personalised care and the positive impact of understanding and addressing individual needs. Through compassion, innovation, and unwavering support, George enjoys the independence and quality of life every 20-year-old deserves.
